ABSTRACT

Zoonoses become more complicated due to transmission of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) determinants along with the infection. Over prescription and over- the- counter sale of antimicrobials are the major causes of AMR in human, but use of antimicrobials in food animals, and environmental resistance gene pool also plays important roles. AMR leads to enormous financial losses associated with high morbidity, mortality, man-day loss etc. It is estimated that two-third of the antibiotics produced is consumed by the livestock sector globally. Other than direct way the livestock are also exposed to the resistant bugs through the exposure to the contaminated environment. Few strategies like construction of a ‘National AMR Task Force’ for monitoring and surveillance of antimicrobial use, prevalence of antimicrobial resistance rate and detection of antibiotic residues in livestock, and foods, strengthening the disease prevention in food animals, maintenance of good herd health etc. should be prioritized for mitigation of AMR in livestock sector.
