Sensitivity Pattern to Antimicrobial Agents and Animal Susceptibility of Yersinia enterocolitica Isolated from Human and Animal

ABSTRACT

Yersinia enterocolitica was isolated from the faeces of a seven-year-old boy, the faeces and vomitus of a family pet cat and from the intestinal contents of a pig reared by the same family and slaughtered for meat purposes. The isolation was identified as Yersinia enterocolitica and was typed as Biotype-2, Serotype-0:9, 1 and Phage type X3 and XZ. The isolated seven strains of Yersinia enterocolitica were subjected to tests with different antimicrobial agents and showed that all the strains were resistant to penicillin, Ampicillin, Tetracycline, Urolocosil and Septran but sensitive to Neomycin, Chloramphenicol, Streptomycin, Kanamycin and to a lesser extent to Furadantin. The isolated seven strains were also subjected to an animal susceptibility test, revealing that all the strains were non-pathogenic to guinea-pigs, rabbits and mice except Strain No. Ye 8460 and Ye 8465 caused the death of two out of six rabbits and three out of six mice respectively after showing severe diarrhoea and elevation of temperature on post-mortem examination the animals showed signs of enterocolitis; diffuse, small, discrete nodular lesions on the liver and spleen. Organisms were also isolated from heart-blood, liver and spleen and different biochemical tests conformed to Y. enterocolitica. The isolates were motile at 22-25C.
